Web3 developer salary in 2023: Median of $128K stays unaltered.

According to a recent survey conducted by Pantera Capital, the median salary for a Web3 developer in 2023 is $128,000. The survey, which included responses from over 1,600 individuals in 77 countries, revealed that the highest salaries for Web3 engineers were reported in North America, with a median salary of $166,610. This was followed by salaries of $102,226 in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, $90,559 in Latin America, and $75,000 in the Asia Pacific Region. The majority of respondents (40.1%) worked in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, while 26.1% worked in centralized finance and 15.2% were involved in blockchain infrastructure.

The survey also found that less than 2% of developers worked in a physical office space full-time, with the majority (87.8%) opting for fully-remote work. Only 10.6% of respondents said they worked in a hybrid in-person/remote work environment. In the United States, the salaries for junior and intermediate-level Web3 developers decreased by 4-8% over the past year, ranging from $110,000 to $150,000. However, compensation for senior-level developers increased by 1.5% to reach $192,585 during the same period.

The survey also analyzed salary levels for other roles in the Web3 industry. Finance, business development, and product operations positions reported similar salary ranges to that of Web3 developers. On the other hand, salaries for Web3 marketing and operations experts were relatively lower, with junior positions in these roles earning less than $66,000. For Web3 executives, starting salaries in the United States varied between $147,363 for seed startups and $335,400 for firms beyond Series C funding. Interestingly, 97% of all respondents received their salaries in traditional fiat currencies, while the remaining 3% chose to be paid in cryptocurrency.

In addition to regular salaries, the survey revealed that one in five respondents received a token incentive package from their companies. The average value of these token incentives ranged from $50,000 for seed companies to $130,000 for Series C+ firms. Typically, these token incentives come with a vesting schedule lasting over four years. Pantera Capital plans to update this data every six months to track the evolving trends in Web3 salaries.

Overall, the survey results highlight the strong demand for Web3 developers and the competitive compensation packages being offered in the industry. As the Web3 ecosystem continues to grow and expand, it is expected that these salary levels will continue to rise, attracting more talent to the field.
