OpenSea, a nonfungible token (NFT) platform, has responded to accusations on social media regarding the alleged involvement of its former employee in the AnubisDAO rug pull in 2021. The anonymous account NFT Ethics tagged OpenSea in an October 6 thread on X (formerly Twitter), asking for a response to allegations against Kevin Pawlak, the platform’s former head of ventures. NFT Ethics claims that Pawlak is linked to the pseudonymous identity “0xSisyphus” and was involved in “various dubious business dealings.”
Both NFT Ethics and blockchain analytics account Lookonchain have alleged that 0xSisyphus, and consequently Pawlak, played a significant role in promoting the AnubisDAO project. The project raised funds and then transferred them to external wallets, leaving investors at a loss. NFT Ethics suggests that Pawlak’s involvement in the rug pull was premeditated, and the proceeds were laundered through the memecoin Pepe (PEPE).
However, according to OpenSea, Pawlak’s alleged involvement in such activities is unknown to them. The platform’s spokesperson clarified that Pawlak had a limited scope while working at OpenSea in a non-management position. They stated, “We have no awareness of his involvement with the projects in question.” OpenSea further mentioned that they have no connection or information about the projects mentioned, as they occurred before Pawlak’s time at the company.
In October 2021, AnubisDAO managed to raise 13,556 Ether (ETH), equivalent to $60 million at that time, from crypto investors. However, within 20 hours, the funds were transferred to different wallet addresses, resulting in an instant loss for the investors. Blockchain sleuth ZachXBT expressed skepticism towards the accusations, calling the thread “mid-curve” and suggesting that many assumptions were made without concrete evidence.
Another factor raising doubts about the accusations is the fact that 0xSisyphus offered a 1,000 ETH bounty to anyone who could identify the wallet address responsible for draining the pool. They also engaged law enforcement agencies in the United States and Hong Kong. ZachXBT emphasized that while Sisyphus may be at fault for gross negligence and lying about the Anubis team multisig, stealing money from one’s own project is different. They also questioned whether the Department of Homeland Security did not monitor Sisyphus, as they were the only team member in contact with the agency.
ZachXBT identified two pseudonymous users, “Beerus” and “Ersan,” as the most likely actors responsible for the loss of funds in the AnubisDAO scandal. Despite the allegations made on social media, OpenSea maintains its lack of knowledge regarding Pawlak’s involvement in the AnubisDAO rug pull. The situation highlights the challenges faced by the NFT industry in maintaining trust and transparency amidst allegations and controversy.
Ultimately, further investigation is needed to gather concrete evidence and determine the true extent of Pawlak’s involvement, if any, in the AnubisDAO rug pull. As the NFT market continues to evolve, platforms like OpenSea will need to take measures to address concerns and strengthen trust within the community.
