Atari founder: Play-to-earn games fuel ‘real’ gamers’ animosity towards crypto.

The rise of play-to-earn games has caused a lot of traditional gamers to develop a strong dislike for crypto and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in their games. Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, believes that this disdain stems from these play-to-earn games that pioneered blockchain gaming. According to Bushnell, good gamers do not enjoy grinding and prefer to have fun while playing. However, play-to-earn games rely heavily on the greater fool theory to be successful.

During an interview with Cointelegraph, Bushnell, also known as the “godfather of video games,” shared his perspective on the current gaming landscape and the role of blockchain technology in the future of the industry. Although claiming to have “invented video games” might sound outrageous to some, it was just one aspect of Bushnell’s illustrious career, which also included founding Atari, the gaming system, and Chuck E. Cheese, the American dining chain. He was also once the employer of Steve Jobs.

Bushnell believes that the future of Web3 gaming depends on moving away from play-to-earn dynamics and focusing more on building immersive virtual worlds using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology. He explains that the mass adoption of these virtual worlds will rely on people’s need for socialization and a sense of “place and time” in the new virtual economy. The ability to meet people and create connections will be crucial in making the metaverse a reality.

Currently, Bushnell serves as the chief knowledge officer at Moxy, a blockchain-based esports company. He highlighted three pillars where blockchain can enhance modern gaming. First, the ability to transfer funds securely and seamlessly is essential for turning gaming into a platform for competition. Second, smart contracts offer utility not only in games but also in establishing relationships and setting the terms of those relationships. Lastly, blockchain technology provides a secure way to store the value of digital assets in the form of currencies and tokens.

Bushnell was initially indifferent to cryptocurrency when introduced to it by Tether co-founder Brock Pierce. However, after witnessing the surge in Bitcoin’s price, he realized there was more to blockchain technology than he had initially thought. Bushnell does not have significant exposure to cryptocurrencies due to their volatile nature, but he believes that when humans share a perception of value en masse, it usually indicates a positive outcome.

In conclusion, the animosity towards crypto and NFTs among traditional gamers can be traced back to the rise of play-to-earn games. Bushnell believes that the future of Web3 gaming lies in creating immersive virtual worlds through VR and AR technology. He also sees the potential of blockchain technology in enhancing gaming experiences and believes that widespread acceptance of cryptocurrencies signifies positive progress.
