A recent report by Incogni has revealed that more than two-thirds of AI-powered extensions for the Google Chrome browser pose a high risk to user cybersecurity if breached. The report, published in August, analyzed 70 AI Chrome extensions across seven different categories. It found that 48 out of 70 extensions had a high-risk impact if breached, with all 10 writing extensions falling into this category. Despite this, 60% of the extensions were deemed to have a low risk of facing a security breach in the first place.
Darius Belejevas, the head of Incogni, emphasized the importance of prioritizing privacy and security, even though these extensions offer undeniable convenience. He stated that users should understand the data they share with extensions and ensure its safety. According to the data, 59% of the analyzed extensions collect user data, with 44% of them collecting personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, and identification numbers.
In order to embrace the benefits of AI while safeguarding personal information, Belejevas advises users to be cautious when choosing AI Chrome extensions and stay informed about their potential risks. Privacy and user data collection have become major concerns as AI applications become more accessible. In June, Google changed its privacy policy to allow data scraping for training its AI systems. However, the policy change was met with a class-action lawsuit claiming violations of privacy and property rights.

On the other hand, the Indian government recently passed a bill through the lower house of parliament that would ease data compliance regulations for BigTech companies like Google and Meta.
