Google and its charitable arm, Google.org, have announced the launch of the Digital Futures Project, an initiative aimed at studying responsible artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. With a total investment of $20 million, the Mountain View company plans to provide grants to leading think tanks and academic institutions across the globe in order to foster dialogue and inquiry into AI technologies. The project’s primary focus is to address various issues such as fairness, bias, misinformation, security, and the future of work. Google aims to achieve this through deep collaboration with external organizations, with a strong commitment to facilitating responsible discussion and development of AI.
In line with this mission, Google has already awarded grants to several organizations, including the Aspen Institute, Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Center for a New American Security, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Institute for Security and Technology, Leadership Conference Education Fund, MIT Work of the Future, R Street Institute, and SeedAI. These organizations will contribute their expertise and research to help Google achieve its goals in promoting responsible AI development.
The timing of this launch coincides with an important meeting in Washington D.C. on September 13th called the “AI Forum,” which will be hosted by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The CEOs of major technology corporations, including Alphabet/Google CEO Sundar Pichai, former Google CEO and Chairman Eric Schmidt, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, are expected to attend. Representatives from civil rights organizations will also be present.
The AI Forum brings together CEOs of U.S. companies with a combined total market value well over $6 trillion. Notably, it will mark the first time that Zuckerberg and Musk will be in the same room since their highly publicized mixed-martial-arts match fell apart. The purpose of this event, according to Senator Schumer’s office, is to discuss artificial intelligence policy. It is the first of a series of nine meetings scheduled throughout the fall, although it remains uncertain whether future events will feature the same guest list.
