Meta releases new AI music tools to challenge Google’s MusicLM in generative music technology.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has recently launched a suite of generative AI models called AudioCraft, which aims to facilitate music creation from various inputs. The suite includes MusicGen and AudioGen, both of which use text-based inputs to generate new audio, as well as EnCodec, which enhances the quality of music generation. According to Meta’s blog post, the MusicGen model was trained using licensed or owned music.

However, this release comes amidst a backdrop of controversy surrounding the use of copyrighted material in AI training. Meta has already faced a copyright infringement lawsuit related to AI training. It is important for companies to address these concerns and ensure that AI models are developed using appropriate licenses and permissions.

Currently, Meta has made MusicGen and AudioGen available in different sizes for the research community and developers. As the company continues to refine and enhance these models, it envisions their usefulness for both amateur and professional musicians. Meta believes that MusicGen has the potential to become a new type of instrument, just like synthesizers when they first emerged.

In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, also drew comparisons between the emergence of AI-generated music and the early days of synthesizers in the music industry. This highlights the transformative potential of AI in music creation.

Meta’s release of generative AI music tools follows closely after Google launched its own set of similar tools called MusicLM, which converts text into music. Back in May, Google announced that it was accepting early testers for MusicLM through its AI Test Kitchen platform. This competitive landscape highlights the race among tech giants to develop and deploy the most powerful AI models.

Aside from music, Meta has been actively releasing new AI tools in various domains. On August 1, the company announced the launch of AI chatbots with personalities, which will serve as search helpers and a fun product for users on its platforms.

Meta’s efforts, as well as those of other major tech companies like Google and Microsoft, underline the growing importance of AI and its potential to revolutionize different industries.
