United States Representative Patrick McHenry has been appointed as the interim House Speaker following the removal of Kevin McCarthy from the position. McCarthy’s ousting occurred after a 216-210 vote, with eight of the 216 votes coming from fellow Republicans. This marks the first time in U.S. history that a House Speaker has been removed. Matt Gaetz, one of McCarthy’s political rivals, initiated the motion for the vote due to several contradictory promises made by McCarthy.
While McHenry’s appointment is temporary, it could have positive implications for the digital asset sector. As the House Speaker, McHenry will have the power to set the legislative agenda, control committee assignments, and schedule bills for debate and voting. This position is considered one of the most influential in the U.S. government, second only to the President and Vice President.
Notably, McHenry has been a vocal opponent of the Securities Exchange Commission’s (SEC) regulatory approach to the cryptocurrency sector. He has challenged SEC Chair Gary Gensler in congressional hearings, accusing him of attempting to “choke off the digital asset ecosystem” and questioning the SEC’s transparency regarding its connections with FTX and its former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried.
Earlier this year, McHenry released a discussion draft called the “Digital Asset Market Structure Proposal.” The proposal aims to bring clarity, fill regulatory gaps, and foster innovation in the cryptocurrency space. It received praise from industry leaders for its potential to create a more favorable regulatory environment.
Despite McHenry’s appointment, his tenure as House Speaker may be short-lived. An official vote for a new House Speaker is scheduled for October 11. It is speculated that Representative Tom Emmer, another advocate for cryptocurrencies, or even former President Donald Trump could potentially replace McCarthy. However, none of them have publicly expressed interest in the position.
Meanwhile, McCarthy has confirmed that he won’t run for House Speaker again, indicating that there will be a significant shift in leadership within the House. The outcome of the upcoming vote will determine the new House Speaker and the direction of legislative priorities in the future.
