The United States Space Force has implemented a temporary ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools by its staff while on duty, in order to protect government data. According to a report by Bloomberg, Space Force members were informed that they are not authorized to use web-based generative AI tools, which create text, images, and other media, unless they receive specific approval. Lisa Costa, Space Force’s deputy chief of space operations for technology and innovation, acknowledged that generative AI has the potential to revolutionize the workforce and enhance operations, but expressed concerns regarding current cybersecurity and data handling standards.
The decision by the Space Force has already had an impact on at least 500 individuals who were using a generative AI platform called “Ask Sage,” as reported by Bloomberg. Nick Chaillan, former chief software officer for the United States Air Force and Space Force, criticized the ban, stating that it would put the US years behind China. Chaillan argued that the decision was short-sighted, especially considering that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has developed generative AI tools that meet data security standards.
Leaking private information into the public domain has become a growing concern for governments in recent months. In March, Italy temporarily blocked the AI chatbot ChatGPT due to suspected breaches of data privacy rules, before reversing its decision about a month later. Tech giants such as Apple, Amazon, and Samsung have also implemented restrictions on the use of ChatGPT-like AI tools by their employees to mitigate the risk of losing control over customer information and source code.
