The launch of Worldcoin on Optimism has stirred up controversy in the Web3 community, as many are questioning whether this project contradicts the principles of decentralization it was built upon. Despite these concerns, more than 2 million people in underserved areas have already signed up to participate in Worldcoin’s biometric data collection program, in exchange for 25 WLD, currently valued at less than $100. This raises serious privacy concerns and creates potential vulnerabilities for malicious actors. Additionally, there are arguments that this initiative could encroach on the sovereignty of other nations.
Worldcoin was established as a solution to address the unintended consequences of its sister company, OpenAI, which is the creator of popular AI products like ChatGPT. However, the irony in this situation is hard to ignore. Some of ChatGPT’s own responses to the question, “What are the risks in having one company own biometric data for individuals in underdeveloped countries?” include privacy violations, security breaches, and surveillance and sovereignty concerns. Influential figures like Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have also expressed similar apprehensions.
The concentration of biometric data in the hands of a single centralized company poses significant risks for individuals. This sensitive information, such as iris scans, has the potential to reveal personal details, including sex, ethnicity, and possibly even medical conditions. If this data is controlled by a single entity, there is a high risk of privacy violations, as it could be exploited to track and monitor individuals without their consent. This goes against the principles of privacy and autonomy that many have been advocating for.
Centralizing biometric data also increases the likelihood of security breaches, making it an attractive target for hackers and cybercriminals. Storing a large amount of valuable data in one place creates a “honeypot” scenario, where the entity responsible expects a breach to occur at some point. If such a breach were to happen, the consequences could be severe, including identity theft, fraud, and unauthorized access to the personal information of millions of people.
Moreover, if governments gain access to this data, they could exploit it for their own purposes, such as manipulating behaviors, suppressing opposition, and limiting dissent. Selling biometric data to a third party diminishes the existing protections individuals have against government intrusion. Furthermore, if the company operates across borders and supports a significant number of foreign citizens through a universal basic income model, it could potentially undermine the autonomy and sovereignty of democratic processes in those countries.
The language used by Worldcoin in its promotional materials is also unsettling. By referring to individuals as “Verified Human” when scanning their irises at Worldcoin’s Orbs, it creates a sense that personhood is being overshadowed by the idea of being reduced to mere data points in a massive database. It raises questions about the underlying respect for individual identity and the potential dehumanization that can accompany such data collection initiatives.
While Worldcoin presents itself as an opportunity to increase economic opportunities and potentially pave the way for AI-funded universal basic income, the concerns surrounding privacy violations, security breaches, surveillance, and sovereignty cannot be ignored. This could potentially lead to a future where personal autonomy and dignity are compromised for financial gain and technological advancement. In a world that often seems like a Black Mirror episode, it is essential to question and critically evaluate such initiatives to ensure the protection of our fundamental rights and values.
