‘Couldn’t Care Less About Free Speech’ Says Burke on Blocking Dozens of Visas

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has revealed dozens of visas have been denied because of statements made by applicants in the media and online, saying he couldn’t care less about freedom of speech if what people were saying undermined social cohesion.

In his first newspaper interviews since the election, Burke also disclosed that a surge in illegal maritime arrivals over the past 18 months was the result of a shift in people smuggler operations since he held the portfolio in the Rudd Labor government.
